Their aim was to raise awareness of the need to protect rural areas and they supported the organisation they considered to be the most dedicated to preserving England's heritage: the National Trust. At the top of the sandbank are the ruins of the 14th century St Catherine's Chapel. Lovely, varied terrain and views. The hill has extensive bluebell woods in late April/early May, and glorious golden beech colours in autumn. The walk starts from the free Chantry Wood Car Park located off Pilgrims Way. (NOTE: These next two fields may contain cattle). g) Guildford to Chilworth short walk via Chantries Hill and St Martha's Hill: a very scenic walk of 7.9km (4.9 miles). Second time following this path. For the main walk, turn left and follow the path across the open field to East Shalford Lane.Cross over East Shalford Lane to reach the footpath just to the left. The bluebells in the spring is a spectacular sight and the scent of them is a delight. Keep to the main footpath as it winds uphill to the left, ignoring other turn-offs. Continue to follow the path to the bottom of the hill. Go through this gate to leave the woods and continue parallel with the woods until you reach a large open field containing fire pits and disused toilets. Views from the south side are stunning overlooking Chilworth, Chinthurst Hill and St Martha's can also be seen on the other hill. Another walk with plenty to see along the way. Continue up Pilgrims Way until you reach the start point at Chantry Wood Car Park on the right-hand side. Pass in front of the cottage, go through the gate and continue on to reach St. Catherine's Lock. It starts on the tranquil River Wey Navigation, briefly follows the North Downs Way, and then veers off up to climb the wooded Chantries Hill for fine escarpment views at the top. Guildford also has excellent public transport links. It then follows the towpath along the Wey Navigation to Shalford Park, returning back to the starting point at Chantry Wood Car Park. Before reaching the woods, turn left through a kissing gate and keep to the path along the top of the field. Lots of different terrains underfoot so very interesting and a good one for the kids to enjoy. This is a steep path with fun ski-run type S-bends. Follow the path, cross over Riff-Raff Weir and pass in front of Riff-Raff Cottage. Covid-19 : Avoid popular areas, walk within your ability, dogs on leads, avoid public transport if possible.
At the top of the hill, on the right is a kissing gate. Carry on for about 10m and take a path that bears downwards to the left. The walk mainly follows marked footpaths but has a few steep climbs and descents. Lovely varied walk with plenty of woodland, open fields, rivers. Cross at the crossing and continue directly ahead up Pilgrims Way. Refreshments only at the start and finish. Keep going to the next kissing gate and go through this (passing some water troughs on the left). At the T-junction, turn right and continue along the bottom of the field until you reach a path to the left across an open field.
Continue on until you reach a wooden gate. Check out the view across the Surrey Hills.Retrace your steps back to the large wooden gate and enter the field in front of the woods (do NOT re-enter the woods). Archives Archives. Second time however the river had overflowed and the path had water making it impassable (we ended up taking our shoes and socks off and wading through!)
