Decel popping is caused by the detonation of unburned fuel in the exhaust pipe. Popping on deceleration is due to unburnt fuel being ignited in the exhaust.

how do i do this myself and where do i get the software? popping my vulcan has always popped a little on deceleration since the day I brought it home from the dealership im pretty sure some popping is normal since im all stock and the bike is still running well after 8 or 9 years that's aweful im questioning how long I've had the bike oh well its popped for ar least eight years and yes it does sound cool When I decelerate/slow down, I get a periodic popping noise from the muffler. Popping on decel is a lean condition.

Exhaust leaks can cause decel pop, make sure the exhaust is sealed completely at the motor, and at any other connections. This happens with high flow exhausts that allow more fresh air to be pulled into the pipe, causing the exhaust temperature to rise and detonate any unburnt fuel. That should stop all popping. We would suggest tuning with a Power Commander, or Vance & Hines FP3. Good power mid and top end.
Here's some light on the issue: The drastic change in velocity (back to idle/from the high pressure to low pressure) slows down the air/fuel mix abruptly. You need to be able to add 5 to 10% fuel @ 0% throttle.

This fresh air makes the exhaust hotter (think of letting a fire have more oxygen) which aids in the combustion of the unburnt fuel.To REDUCE (it may not totally go away) popping on deceleration first make sure that you do not have any intake or exhaust leaks. My local HD staff gave me the excuse that back-firing when deaccelerating is normal for a cruiser and stated that all cruisers do this some. When you decelerate, you reduce the amount of throttle. I added a fuel controller to add fuel and it never back fired again. You may find that you are limited as to what you can do with the S/E tuner.If you are trying to auto tune you may be chasing you tail.
