It takes a lot to make these short videos.In the captions to these posts, abbreviated phrases show up. It fascinated me, the variety of these videos, colloquially known as edits.Some are beautiful, in terms of creativity and aesthetic. Clips edited to a song, with added effects and shakes and color correction. You’re cruising through your Twitter or Instagram feed, reading dispatches from folks you follow, when suddenly you come across an acronym you’ve never seen before. I see DT posted under a ton of Instagram edits for example "Dt: user12" (in which the person tagged will say thanks or whatever) But why do people use it ? Instagram is full of very, very talented individuals who make their transitions and effects from scratch– some use After Effects, some Final Cut Pro, some Sony Vegas Pro, and some even use phone apps.It’s a way to express oneself, and to inspire others to create something beautiful and impactful. Notice how there’s so much going on– the slow motion (which editors call velocity), and fades, and the loop.
