The self-supplied musical score from Bonello helps to accentuate a movie which apprehends the irrepressibility of teenage disaffection, and overall it's victorious enough in establishing a distinctive and affecting ambience while generously developing its unusual relationship to space and time.This is so tremendously similar to a short piece that I wrote while locked in a residential treatment facility, during my senior year of high school (the narrative was legitimately a multigenerational story about Clairvius Narcisse himself, and one of his relatives!)

He approaches the subject in both literal and poetic sense & audaciously toggles between two time periods and locales. It tells two disconnected stories (or at least, that's what writer/director Bertrand Bonello wants you to think): one of a reanimated man forced to work in sugar plantations, and another of a young, high-school girl trying to fit into boarding school while pining for her boyfriend. Bonello's film however is not concerned about the codes of female bond but the enduring effects of colonialism, even dabbling in cultural appropriation. After the death of her grandmother, Teresa comes home to her matriarchal village in a near-future Brazil to find a succession of sinister events that mobilizes all of its residents. The “Zombi Child” movie is an interesting entry in the zombie genre, with an interesting score and surreal visuals. The magic is there, just waiting to be tapped into, but we've lost our way. X. Lol.
