At zero, the lights burst into view (from west to east) on the peaks and gables of Hughes Hall, Launer Auditorium, St. Clair Hall, Dorsey Hall, Atkins-Holman Student Commons and Missouri Hall.The lights are the brainchild of Bonnie Brouder, wife of the college's 16th president, Gerald Brouder. Students then chose this art as the mascot’s image and dubbed him “Scooter.” Scooter wears the number 51 on his jersey in honor of the college's founding in 1851.The daisy, known for its effortless beauty and promise of life, is the flower of Columbia College. Specially designated graduates, known as ivy cutters, then cut the ivy from each person, signifying that although now separate from Columbia College and classmates, graduates will always remain a part of Columbia College.Columbia College welcomes the holiday season with an annual holiday lighting ceremony on Bass Commons at the main campus in Columbia, Missouri.
By 1988, Columbia College was considering changing its centaur mascot.
Navy blue and silver were chosen as the college colors because they exude strength and pride, respectively. The building came to mean “Annilee” to St. Clair, in memory of her only child who died at age 12 of inflammatory rheumatism just after the completion of the building. When someone yells, "WE ARE", the response is always loudly and proudly, "CC." The Cougar is a leader in its community.
His presence has been a bonding force for Columbia College Alumni across all venues and images of Scooter have traveled the world. President Scott Dalrymple decreed it so during his inauguration speech, October 17, 2014, in Southwell Complex. The college president, along with the Student Government Association (SGA) president, leads a countdown. The purpose of The Pride is to increase student involvement and attendance at athletic events and school functions. Columbia College nurtures community engagement and prepares international students for life in Canada. We are the Columbia College Cougars.
Columbia College is BC’s oldest university transfer educational institution. Students, faculty and staff wear navy and silver proudly across campus to show off their Cougar Pride.
Our mascot, Scooter the Cougar, first appeared in 1984, replacing the Centaur mascot which originated in 1976.
The Cougar is assertive and decisive and takes charge in every situation. I owe my career success to Columbia College.
