Season 4 sees both Rachel Bailey and Janet Scott in line for promotion but with only one sergeant's role up for grabs, they must compete against each other.
After promising that the chaos of her personal life was behind her, Rachel is torn when she discovers that her mother's new boyfriend is a violent domestic abuser. Wading through narrow-minded police work and re-interviewing bruised and bereft family members, makes this a particularly challenging case.
The couple point the police towards their baby-sitter Adjoah and her drug-addicted boyfriend Nick Wootton and cocaine found in Drew's system puts Wootton in the frame but then Adjoah tells Janet that Jenny was an inadequate mother who took drugs herself, a fact borne out by Marcus.
But when the divers are called in, the body they find is that of a young woman.
Unable to get over being second choice for the sergeant's job, Rachel punishes Janet for not telling her. However, Rachel and Will have been enjoying a passionate yet discreet affair for the past few months.
When a man's body is found wedged between rocks on the moors with nothing to identify him, a road block is set up and an appeal put out.
