During a vacation to Napa Valley, a group of long time friends reunite and revisit past choices in this hilarious and heartfelt comedy from director Amy Poehler.
On a weekend trip to Hawaii, a plastic surgeon convinces his loyal assistant to pose as his soon-to-be-divorced wife in order to cover up a careless lie he told to his much-younger girlfriend. Pete and Debbie are both about to turn 40, their kids hate each other, both of their businesses are failing, they're on the verge of losing their house, and their relationship is threatening to fall apart. Michael McCullers' script is soft-headed to the point of inanity. After learning from the steely head of their surrogacy center that Angie is pregnant, Kate goes into precision nesting mode: reading childcare books, baby-proofing the apartment and researching top pre-schools. Those who followed Miranda’s and Brendan’s love story know that it is messy and Brendan quickly moved on with Miranda leaving behind his ex Kaihla Rettinger and their son Landon, who is now only 19-months-old. After her husband abruptly asks for a divorce, a middle-aged mother returns to college in order to complete her degree. She plays a character, career-minded health food chain VP Kate Holbrook, not far removed from her 30 Rock alter-ego Liz Lemon, while Poehler plays surrogate mom wannabe Angie to her strength of mouthy mania often seen during her SNL days.

While this comedy does have a few mild laughs, it mostly misfires, thanks to a script that is nowhere near the talent level of its cast. I thought that it would be a water-downed, overlong SNL skit with one woman asking another to carry her baby, leading to a generic odd couple pairing with hijinks and gags piling on top of each other, collapsing under its own weight. Having thought that monogamy was never possible, a commitment-phobic career woman may have to face her fears when she meets a good guy.

Baby Mama is far more funny than it has any right to be and boasts a dynamite pairing that shows plenty of promise for the future: here's hoping Fey and Poehler pick something a little less formulaic for their next project.
