Kendricks began pole vaulting in seventh grade.

To wit, earlier in the year he set a personal best (19’5”/5.92 meters), winning at the IAAF World Challenge in Beijing, China; was a two-time NCAA Champion while at the University of Mississippi; and led Oxford High School to a MHSAA 5A State Championship. When Sam came through the program, he produced a high school best for the State of Mississippi, which still stands today.
